Gressoney-La-Trinité
Località Tschaval 5, 11020 Gressoney-La-Trinité
In season daily 9:00-23:00; days and hours can vary
FZRY - short for FitzRoy - is at Tschaval, where the road ends at the head of the Gressoney valley and Monte Rosa fills the view. A young team runs the bar and restaurant, which has a fireplace and two dining rooms that mix old alpine wood with a modern look. The kitchen reworks Aosta Valley classics with produce from nearby: fassone beef fillet with lime and pink pepper, beef cooked slowly and served with tuna sauce, fresh tagliolini with artichokes and guanciale, or cheek braised in Torrette red wine and served with polenta and glazed shallots. The menu changes with the seasons, and the bar pours cocktails and wines from many regions. Tables can be booked online, by phone or on WhatsApp.
Gressoney-La-Trinité
Località Bedemie 11, 11020 Gressoney-La-Trinité
Winter season until April and from late June to September, daily 9:00-24:00
Morgenrot is a chalet restaurant in the meadows of Bedemie above Gressoney-La-Trinité, run by its owner, Giorgio. The kitchen keeps to the Aosta Valley: fondue chinoise, polenta concia rich with melted cheese, and zuppa alla valpellinentze, the local soup of bread, cabbage and fontina baked in the oven. The wine list stays close to home too, with labels from the Aosta Valley and Piedmont. In winter the chalet sits in deep snow and is reached on skis during the day. For dinner a snowcat picks guests up and brings them back down again, which turns an evening meal into a small expedition. In summer it is a walk across green pastures.
Gressoney-La-Trinité
Località Bettaforca 6/A, 11020 Gressoney-La-Trinité
Open while the lifts run, in the winter and the summer season
Ristoro Colle Betta sits at 2,727 meters on the Bettaforca pass, right where the Sant'Anna-Bettaforca chairlift arrives, in the middle of the Monterosa ski area between the Gressoney valley and the Val d'Ayas. In winter skiers stop on the snow terrace facing the Monte Rosa massif; in summer hikers come up on the trail from Stafal or ride the lifts via Sant'Anna. The hut is large and spread over two floors. The menu mixes Aosta Valley and Piedmontese dishes with pizza, sandwiches and toasts for a quick stop between runs, the cellar holds a good range of wines, and the bar serves beer, coffee and hot chocolate. It is open for as long as the lifts are running.
Gressoney-La-Trinité
Località Sitten 16, 11020 Gressoney-La-Trinité
Open in the ski and summer seasons; self-service at lunchtime, dinner by reservation
Ristoro Sitten is a mountain refuge at 2,300 metres above Staffal, in the Monterosa Ski area, with Monte Rosa filling the view from the terrace. In winter it is reached on skis or with the Sant'Anna cable car from Staffal; in summer the cable car and a 4x4 shuttle bring walkers up, or it is a hike. Run by the Comola family's company, it works as two places in one. At lunchtime it is a self-service with quick dishes, hot sandwiches and Aosta Valley plates for skiers and hikers; in the evening it becomes a restaurant with regional cooking, and on Saturdays in season a high-altitude dinner with a snowcat ride up after the lifts have closed. There is a wood-fired hot tub outside for those staying the night, and beds for anyone who wants to be first on the slopes.
Gressoney-La-Trinité
Piazza Tache, 11020 Gressoney-La-Trinité
Daily from 8:00 until late
Castore & Polluce stands on Piazza Tache, the square at the heart of Gressoney-La-Trinité, and is open from eight in the morning until late at night. The day starts with espresso and homemade cakes; later the kitchen serves modern dishes made from local produce, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices. There are three places to sit: the terrace on the square, the Castore room - an alpine lounge around the bar - and the quieter Polluce room, where the wine is kept. An AIS-certified sommelier looks after around 250 labels and leads tastings, and in the ski season the day ends with after-ski sets from a DJ.
Gressoney-Saint-Jean
Località Fridau 1, 11025 Gressoney-Saint-Jean
12:00-15:00 and 19:00-22:00; open June to October and December to April; closed on Wednesdays in the low season
Ristorante Mont Néry is the restaurant of the Villa Fridau residence in Gressoney-Saint-Jean. Its name goes back to the Locanda Mont Néry, which the family's great-uncles Erwin and Pina Monterin ran in the village in the 1950s. Today Marysa looks after the dining room and chef Boris Melon runs the kitchen. The cooking is Aosta Valley and Piedmontese, built on produce from close by: the valley's cured meats and cheeses, fresh pasta made in the house with a choice of sauces, and game served with polenta. The ice cream is homemade, in flavors that follow the season, and Boris and Marysa are glad to suggest a bottle from the wine list.

Gloria Osteria is an Italian restaurant on Via Tivoli, in the Brera district of Milan. It belongs to the Big Mamma Group, which also runs rooms in Paris, Barcelona, Dublin and Dubai, and the Milan house is the group's Italian one — cooking the country it comes from rather than exporting it. The room is the argument. Seven hundred and forty square metres under eight tall windows, so it is full of daylight in a way few Milanese restaurants manage, furnished with coloured velvet armchairs and built around a counter of Giallo Siena marble. The house describes the look as 1960s glamour, and that is a fair summary: it is theatrical on purpose, and it photographs the way it is meant to. The kitchen is run by chef Manuel and his brigade, and works through the Italian regions rather than one of them, offered either as a tasting menu or à la carte. Cocktails and a selected Italian wine list are served at the marble counter. The group is a certified B Corporation. Service runs every day in two sittings, midday to half past two and half past six to a quarter past ten. Booking is advisable — this is one of the most heavily reviewed restaurants in the city, with close to twelve thousand ratings. Brera is the old artists' quarter, walkable from the Duomo and served by the Lanza and Moscova metro stops. You will find Gloria Osteria at Via Tivoli 3, 20121 Milano.

Maccheroni stands on Via San Carpoforo in Brera and calls itself La Carbonara N°1 di Milano — the number one carbonara in Milan. That is a claim rather than a title, and the restaurant is direct about staking it, which is a reasonable thing to know before you walk in: carbonara is the dish it wants to be judged on. The wider idea is domestic cooking taken seriously. The house describes it as the flavours of home, the way they used to be — but better: the dishes a mother and a grandmother would have cooked, rebuilt with the technique of a professional kitchen. In practice that means a short menu of Italian classics rather than a survey of the regions, and it is the difference between a trattoria and a restaurant doing trattoria food. It opens every day from half past twelve until half past ten at night, straight through with no afternoon break. Tables can be booked through the restaurant's own site, by telephone, or by e-mail. Via San Carpoforo is a quiet street in the middle of Brera, the old artists' quarter, a few minutes on foot from the Pinacoteca di Brera and from the Lanza metro stop. It is a part of the city where the streets are narrow enough that a restaurant is found rather than passed, which suits this one. You will find Maccheroni at Via San Carpoforo 7, 20121 Milano.

Piz is a pizzeria on Via Torino in central Milan, and by review count it is the most talked-about place to eat in the city — more than sixteen thousand people have rated it, far ahead of any restaurant in Milan. It has been open for over ten years, which in a city where fashions and venues turn over quickly is the point the house makes about itself. The format is deliberately narrow: Neapolitan-style pizza, a short menu, a low price band. There is seating outdoors and pizza can be collected to take away. What the numbers describe is a room that is busy from midday onwards, and the queue outside is part of the experience rather than a sign that something went wrong — going early or late is the practical advice. It is open every day. Monday and Tuesday it runs in two sittings, midday to three and seven to eleven; from Wednesday to Sunday it stays open straight through from midday to eleven at night. Via Torino leads southwest out of Piazza del Duomo towards the Carrobbio, so this is a five-minute walk from the cathedral and inside the ring most visitors never leave. If you are staying anywhere central you can walk here, and the street itself is one of Milan's busiest shopping runs. You will find Piz at Via Torino 34, 20123 Milano.

Princi is a Milanese bakery, and the shop on Via Speronari is a few steps from the Duomo. The house has been baking since 1986 under the name L'Artigiano del Pane — the craftsman of bread — and it is one of the small number of Milanese food names that became international without leaving: there are Princi bakeries in the United States, Japan, China and Kuwait, all of them selling what the company calls the spirit of Milan. What is sold is bread, pizza, focaccia and pastries, baked through the day rather than in one morning batch, which is why the counter looks different at nine in the morning and at five in the afternoon. Focaccia and pizza al taglio are sold by weight and eaten standing or taken away, and that is how most of the queue uses the place: this is a bakery, not a restaurant, and there is no table service. It opens every day from half past seven in the morning until half past seven in the evening — long hours by Milanese standards, and unusual in covering Sunday. Via Speronari is a short pedestrian street running off Via Torino, inside the block between the Duomo and Piazza Missori. If you are staying in the centre this is the practical answer to breakfast, and a better one than the hotel buffet. You will find Princi at Via Speronari 6, 20123 Milan.

Ristorante Galleria sits inside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the glass-roofed arcade that runs between the Duomo and La Scala. That address is the whole of its character: you eat under the iron and glass of the 1870s, in what is arguably the most photographed interior space in Milan, with the mosaic floor and the passing crowd as the setting. One practical point matters more than anything else here, and the restaurant states it plainly on its own site: the only way to reach them is by e-mail, to info@ristorantegalleria.it, and a booking counts only once they have confirmed it by e-mail in return. They do not use WhatsApp or any messaging service. Anyone booking through a third party claiming otherwise is not booking this restaurant. The kitchen is open long hours — from ten in the morning until midnight, every day of the week — so it covers a mid-morning coffee, lunch, an afternoon in the arcade and a late dinner after the opera. Tables stand out in the Galleria itself. The location makes it one of the easiest addresses in Milan to find and one of the hardest to get a table at on short notice: the Duomo metro stop empties directly into the arcade. If you are staying in the centre, you will pass the door whether you plan to or not. You will find Ristorante Galleria at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II 75, 20121 Milano.

Via Pasteria on Corso Italia does one thing: pasta. The house motto is "for the love of pasta", and the menu is built around it rather than treating it as the first of several courses — which is a departure from the usual Italian structure and the reason the place works for a quick lunch as readily as for dinner. The list changes with the season, and there is a dish of the month alongside it. Recent examples give the flavour of the kitchen: linguine with organic Parmesan, Sicilian lemon, chives and sturgeon caviar; cold conchigliette with cave-aged pecorino, confit tomatoes, Cerignola olives, Sicilian lemon and crusco pepper; paccheri alla Norma with marinated purple aubergine, twenty-four-month Parmigiano Reggiano from Vacche Rosse cattle and salted ricotta; linguine with clams and bottarga. The ingredients are named down to the breed of cow, which tells you where the attention goes. It is open every day, straight through from midday to half past ten at night, with no afternoon closure — genuinely useful in a city where most kitchens shut between three and seven and a late lunch becomes impossible. Corso Italia runs south from the Duomo towards Porta Ludovica, a few minutes' walk from the cathedral and from the Missori metro stop, so this is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the historic centre. You will find Via Pasteria at Corso Italia 16, 20122 Milano.

Antica trattoria Del Tempio stands on Via Creta in Vicobarone, a hamlet of Ziano Piacentino in the Val Tidone. The name is the owners' own and says what kind of house it is: a trattoria, and an old one — the everyday restaurant of an Italian village rather than a destination built for visitors. The opening hours describe how it is used. Lunch is served every day except Wednesday, from midday to half past two. Dinner exists on Friday and Saturday only, from eight to ten. A kitchen arranged that way is cooking for people who eat their main meal in the middle of the day, which in this part of Emilia is still most of them, and it means a visitor planning an evening here on a Tuesday will find it closed. Vicobarone sits in the Colli Piacentini, the wine hills between the Po plain and the Apennine ridge. The province is known for three cured meats with protected status — coppa, pancetta and salame piacentino — and for Gutturnio, the red grown on these slopes. Ziano Piacentino is one of the centres of that production, and Vicobarone is one of its hamlets. We hold no website for this trattoria, so nothing is described here about its cooking. The telephone is the way to ask, and to book. You will find it at Via Creta 6, 29010 Vicobarone, Ziano Piacentino.

Località Albareto 69, 29010 Ziano Piacentino
Wednesday to Saturday 12:00-14:00 and 19:30-21:00; Sunday 12:00-14:00; closed Monday and Tuesday
Casa Galli is a farmhouse restaurant on the hillside at Albareto above Ziano, in the Val Tidone, where the family has cooked for guests since 1997 and the view from the terrace is vineyards down to the valley. The dining room is old stone with a fireplace and candles; in summer the tables move out under the porticoes, and there is a play area for children, which makes it an easy Sunday lunch for families. The food is Piacenza cooking without shortcuts: house cured meats, gnocco fritto, tortelli and pisarei made in the kitchen, roasts, and the Gutturnio of the hills to drink. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, lunch and dinner except Sunday evening; there are rooms and apartments for anyone who wants to stay after the wine.

La Colombaia is an agriturismo above Ziano Piacentino, in the westernmost of the Piacenza valleys. The land was in the family for years before Guido turned it into an agriturismo, and the kitchen is described by the house as cucina piacentina doc — the cooking of this province and no other. The estate is arranged for eating outdoors without depending on the weather: three dining rooms stand in the open but under cover, all of them looking out over the valley, with a bar area for drinks and two further rooms inside. That combination is worth knowing in a region where a summer evening can turn without warning. It sits among the hills and is used as a starting point for the country around it — mountain biking, riding and walking all begin at the door, and the valley is crossed by roads that lead through the historical, scenic and gastronomic parts of the province. The Colli Piacentini are wine country: Gutturnio, Ortrugo and Malvasia are grown on these slopes, and Ziano Piacentino is one of the centres of that. Opening is limited and worth planning around. Friday evening only from eight to ten; Saturday lunch from half past twelve and dinner from eight; Sunday the same with lunch running until half past three. Monday to Thursday it is closed. You will find La Colombaia at Località Arcello 1, 29010 Ziano Piacentino.

Locanda San Lupo stands among the hills and vineyards above Ziano Piacentino, and its own line for itself is where taste meets the sunset. That is a fair description of what it sells: the terrace looks out over the vines, and the house treats the evening light as part of the meal rather than as scenery that happens to be there. It is more than a dining room, in its own account — a refuge in the quiet of the hills, where the point is that time slows down. In practice that means it works for two quite different occasions: a family Sunday lunch, and a dinner for two once the lights come on. There is a wine list, which matters here — these slopes are the Colli Piacentini, and Gutturnio, Ortrugo and Malvasia are grown in the fields the terrace looks at. The hours are unusual and worth reading twice: this is an evening restaurant. It serves dinner from eight to eleven every day except Wednesday, when it is closed, and it does not open for lunch at all. Anyone arriving at midday will find the door shut. Ziano Piacentino lies in the Val Tidone, about forty minutes south-west of Piacenza and well inside an hour of Milan, which makes this a plausible evening out from the city as well as a local one. You will find Locanda San Lupo at Strada Comunale Lupo 101, 29010 Ziano Piacentino.

Le Proposte is a family restaurant in the hamlet of Corano, in Borgonovo Val Tidone, in the hills of the province of Piacenza. Its beginning is unusual and the family tells it plainly: twenty-five years ago Danila and Luigi, with their daughter Manuela, bought a farmhouse in a panoramic position meaning it to be a second home. Cooking took over. In the year 2000 the house opened as a restaurant, and it has been run by the family ever since. The kitchen is traditional and the work is done on the premises: cured meats are aged in the restaurant's own cellars, the pasta is made in the house, and the ingredients are handled daily rather than bought prepared. In this part of Emilia that is not a marketing line — salumi and hand-made pasta are what the province is known for, and doing both in-house is the difference between a country restaurant and a country restaurant worth driving to. The dining room seats about forty. In summer lunch and dinner are served on the panoramic terrace, which is the reason the farmhouse was bought in the first place. It is closed on Monday and Tuesday. From Wednesday to Saturday it serves lunch from half past twelve to two and dinner from eight to eleven; on Sunday the evening ends an hour earlier. Booking is sensible in a room of forty seats. You will find Le Proposte at Frazione Corano 35, 29011 Borgonovo Val Tidone, Piacenza.

La Palta stands in Bilegno, a hamlet so small that the restaurant describes itself as a hidden gem behind uneven walls — set among gentle hills, kitchen gardens and old houses in the province of Piacenza. The building gives nothing away from the road, which is part of how the place presents itself. The cooking is ambitious rather than rustic, and the house says so in its own words: the eyes come before the nose and the palate. Unexpected combinations are the method. Two dishes stand for the range — tortelli con la coda, the tailed parcels that are the signature pasta of Piacenza and are folded here in the traditional way, and black ravioli served in an exotic broth that belongs to no local tradition at all. The kitchen is run by a female chef, and the house describes eating here as travelling between the smells of home and inspirations from far away. Gift vouchers for a lunch or dinner are sold through the restaurant's own site. Service runs Tuesday to Saturday, lunch from half past twelve to half past two and dinner from eight to ten. On Sunday there is lunch only, and Monday it is closed. Booking is advisable: the room is small and the restaurant draws people from well beyond the province. You will find La Palta at Frazione Bilegno 67, 29011 Bilegno, Piacenza.

L'Ami Louis is a fish and seafood restaurant on the quay at Centre-Port in Cap d'Agde, at Quai Di Dominico, 11 Rue de la Gabelle. The name goes back to 1931, when Louis, great-grandfather of the current generation, opened a bar-brasserie near Paris. His daughter Janine and her husband Joseph Abadie took over in 1960; Joseph came from Portiragnes near Béziers, and when Cap d'Agde was built as a resort in the 1970s the family moved south and reopened on the Port Brescou quays. Sons Jean-Louis and Jérôme took charge in 1990, and Vincent Abadie, Joseph's eldest grandson, joined in 2003: four generations. The dining room is contemporary, in pastel tones, with a view over the marina. Fish and shellfish come first: Thau lagoon oysters, rock-fish soup with rouille, sea bass in a salt crust sold by weight, sole belle meunière, monkfish bourride, and lobster or langoustines sold by weight in season. Meat eaters get a four-hour braised lamb shank, duck confit or beef filet; the wines are Minervois, La Clape, Faugères. There is a two-course express formula at weekday lunch, three set menus of increasing length, the full carte, and a children's menu up to age eight. Lunch runs from noon to 1:45 pm, dinner from 7 to 9:45 pm. Outside July and August the restaurant is closed Wednesday, Thursday and Tuesday evening; in high season it serves every evening, with an early-diner offer between 7 and 7:30 pm. Book by phone on +33 4 67 26 25 48 or through the form on the website, not by email. Dogs are welcome if mentioned when booking; high chairs are few, so ask. From a rental in the marina it is a short walk; from Agde old town a quarter of an hour by car.

11 Allée de la Flânerie, 34300 Le Cap d'Agde
Mon–Sun 11:00–22:00
Passion Glacée is an ice-cream parlor at 11 Allée de la Flânerie, the pedestrian street at the heart of Centre-Port in Cap d'Agde, a few steps from the marina. It is a producer, not just a shop: the ice cream is made on the premises in the Italian style from raw ingredients rather than powders or mixes, and even the cones are baked in-house, including a chocolate-dipped version. Alongside the scooped flavors there are sorbets, soft-serve, granitas, milkshakes and smoothies, and for the children crêpes, bubble waffles and churros, also made on site. For the 2025 opening weekend the special was a Ferrero Rocher ice cream churned on the spot. The parlor works a summer rhythm: it opens for the Easter weekend and serves through the season, with the longest lines on July and August evenings when the promenade fills after dinner. There is seating, so it works as a sit-down stop rather than a takeaway window only, and the entrance is step-free. Cards and contactless payment are accepted, Pluxee meal cards too, and there is Wi-Fi. The phone number is +33 4 67 26 32 62; flavors and opening days are posted on the shop's Facebook and Instagram accounts, the quickest way to check a shoulder-season day. For a family in a rental at Cap d'Agde the position is the point: the parlor sits between the marina and the resort beaches, so it fits into an evening walk after the beach or a turn round the port. From Agde old town it is a quarter of an hour by car; the Allée itself is closed to cars, so park in one of the lots around Centre-Port and walk the last stretch.

Mo-Su 06:00-20:00
Le Fournil d'Agde is an artisan bakery at 26 Avenue Général de Gaulle, a few minutes on foot from the old town and the river. Simon Queneau has run it with his team since 2018. The bread is made the slow way: flours from a local miller, older grain varieties among them, a natural sourdough starter, hand kneading. The range covers a crisp baguette de tradition, cereal, rye, corn and whole-wheat loaves, and a soft pain de mie for sandwiches. The pastry counter changes with the seasons and mixes classics (éclairs, millefeuilles, lemon and fruit tarts, chocolate desserts) with the bakery's own creations. Number cakes for birthdays, wedding cakes and petits fours for christenings are made to order; everything, the house states, is made on the premises. For a vacation rental this is above all a supply stop. The shop opens every day, Sunday included, from 6 am to 8 pm, so bread and croissants can be fetched before an early start to the beach, and a picnic put together from the savory counter: bakery pizzas, quiches, sandwiches with crudités, paninis and seasonal salads, plus a dish of the day at lunchtime. There is seating inside and a few tables on the square in front, where a breakfast formula with coffee is served. The bakery also caters private and business events, from starter to dessert, quoted on request. Orders for cakes and catering go through the form on the website or by email to lefournildagde@gmail.com; the phone is +33 4 67 26 76 08, and the day's offer is posted on the bakery's Facebook page. Cap d'Agde and Le Grau-d'Agde are each ten to fifteen minutes away by car, so the bakery suits a rental in Agde itself or a stop on the way out.

47 Rue Brescou, 34300 Agde
Tu-Sa 12:00-14:00, 19:30-22:00
Le Bistro d'Hervé is a small restaurant at 47 Rue Brescou, in the center of Agde's old town a few streets from the Hérault quays. Hervé Dos Santos cooks and Sabine Dos Santos runs the room. The kitchen calls its style creative and refined, built on seasonal produce with the flavors of the South, and is equally fond of "plats canailles", hearty bistro dishes done with care. Recent cards have carried a red tuna tataki with ratatouille, scallops on a Jerusalem artichoke velouté and meagre from the plancha with saffron risotto, next to standards such as eggs en meurette, beef tartare and rum baba. The wines stay in the Languedoc. The house holds the Maître Restaurateur title, which certifies cooking from raw ingredients on the premises, and is listed in the Michelin and Gault&Millau guides. The room is contemporary and air-conditioned, with a small terrace under shade sails and a covered one for hot July evenings. Service runs Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 2 pm and 7:30 to 10 pm; Sunday and Monday are closed, and the restaurant works year-round apart from a break around Christmas and New Year. Tables go quickly in summer, so call +33 4 67 62 30 69 or write to bistroherve@gmail.com a day or two ahead. Groups of up to 40 can be seated with notice. For a family in a vacation rental nearby: there is a children's menu, dogs are accepted, and the premises carry the Tourisme & Handicap label, with step-free tables and adapted restrooms. A public parking lot lies about 100 meters away by the cinema; the train station is a 13-minute walk. From Cap d'Agde or Le Grau-d'Agde count a quarter of an hour by car for an evening away from the beachfront grills.
Le Grau-d'Agde · French · Mediterranean · Fish and seafood
19 Quai du Commandant Méric, 34300 Le Grau-d'Agde
Mon–Sun 11:00–22:00
Le Ponton stands at 19 Quai du Commandant Méric on the left bank of the Hérault at Le Grau-d'Agde, where the river runs out into the Mediterranean. There are three places to sit: a dining room open to the quay, a shaded terrace, and the wooden pontoon that gives the place its name, built out over the river so that you eat with the water under your feet and the boats passing on their way to sea. The beach and the jetty are a few minutes' walk down the quay. The cooking is traditional and Mediterranean, and the house makes its own foie gras, a mi-cuit marinated in Muscat and cooked in a bain-marie, served as a jar for two. The card leans toward the sea: cuttlefish and king prawns on the plancha in Provençal butter, marinated tuna cooked rare, sea bream and sea bass fillets, moules-frites, a plancha mixed grill of fish, Bouzigues oysters and a fry of joël, the tiny local fish, with house aioli. For meat there is roast duck breast and a Black Angus ribeye. The Salade du Ponton stacks foie gras toast, cured ham, smoked salmon and blinis on one plate. A three-course set menu runs every day at lunch and dinner, with orders until 1:30 pm and 9:30 pm, and a children's menu covers children up to age ten. Until the end of June the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Sunday evenings; in July and August it opens every day. Reservations go through the mobile number +33 6 27 20 09 03. Access is step-free, restaurant vouchers and French holiday checks are accepted, and groups of up to 150 can be seated on request. From Agde old town it is four kilometers downriver, ten minutes by car.

Bitburger Straße 1, 54673 Krautscheid
Gasthaus Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri from 15:00, Sat-Sun from 11:30; kitchen Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 18:00-21:00, Sat-Sun 11:30-13:30 and 17:30-20:00; Wed closed
The Islekhöhe stands on the high ground at Krautscheid, on the Bitburg road south of Arzfeld, in the stretch of the Eifel called the Islek where Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium run together. The family that runs it says it has been welcoming guests from near and far for two hundred years, and the house is still a family-run Pension with a regional restaurant attached rather than a hotel with a dining room. The kitchen's promise is put simply on the site: good home cooking, fresh Eifel products and generous portions, with a menu of local specialities and a sample card to download. Meals are served in a modern, comfortable dining room or, in fine weather, on the sunny terrace; in the evening there is a separate Bierstube with Bitburger Pils on tap, the sort of room where a walk is talked over rather than a wine list studied. The house has built its offer around active guests. Motorcyclists have three lockable garages with space for twenty to twenty-five machines and a bikers' weekend package; there is a tennis hall with a tennis weekend, hiking-and-bowling arrangements, and a newly installed charging point for electric vehicles. Guest rooms are kept simple and comfortable, with the clean Eifel air as the main amenity. For someone staying in a holiday home nearby it works as a proper dinner stop on weekday evenings and as a lunch place at the weekend, with the tri-border landscape starting right outside the door.

Hauptstraße 41, 54649 Lambertsberg
Gasthaus open daily; kitchen Mon-Sat 17:30-20:00, Sun 12:00-14:00 and 17:30-20:00; Thu closed (except public holidays and for hotel guests)
The Fünfmädelhaus in Lambertsberg has been in the same family for more than 150 years and is now run by the fifth generation, a Gasthaus with a Pension attached, standing high above the Prüm valley with forests and meadows all around. It is a big house for a village: 24 guest rooms with 52 beds, a restaurant with its own bar, a summer beer garden, two bowling lanes and a function hall that can seat up to about 140 people, which is why weddings, birthdays, family reunions, Christmas parties and club outings end up here. Motorcyclists get free covered parking and pets are welcome by arrangement, and the house lists walkers and cyclists exploring the Südeifel among its regular guests, with plenty for children in the area. The kitchen describes its line as regional classics and seasonal dishes prepared with care, and the menu shows what that means in practice: a cream of sweetcorn soup with black tiger prawns, smoked salmon tartare with avocado and burrata foam, a well-hung Angus rump steak with Café de Paris butter, and the 'Original Eifler Strohschwein', straw-reared pork from the region served Wiener Art or as Cordon Bleu with peas and carrots and potato gratin. There is homemade tagliatelle with burratine and tomato sauce for vegetarians, guinea fowl breast with truffled mushroom pasta, and sea bass in a spiced Asian broth. Desserts change daily, and the ice creams include homemade sorbets. Four-course festive menus and buffets are arranged for parties on request.

Hauptstraße 10, 54649 Waxweiler
Wed-Sat 17:30-22:00; Sun 11:00-14:30, 17:15-21:00; Mon-Tue closed
La Corona is the Italian restaurant on the main street of Waxweiler, the small town in the Prüm valley a few minutes' drive east of Arzfeld. It opened on 15 November 2013 and has since marked its tenth anniversary, which the house mentions with some pride. The dining room is done in a modern style and the owners describe the place as family-friendly, with comfort and a warm welcome as the point rather than any show. The kitchen works with fresh, high-quality ingredients. A meal can start with an aperitif or a cocktail, Martini, gin and tonic or a Negroni, and the wine list is Italian, drawn from several regions. There are homemade soups and fresh salads, pizza bread straight from the oven, and pizzas with a crisp base and generous toppings. Pasta comes with sauces made in-house, and for those who want meat there are schnitzel and Cordon Bleu. Tables can be reserved through the website, which is worth doing for a group on a weekend evening. Music evenings are held from time to time. Beyond the restaurant the family runs a pizza food truck that brings the same oven-baked pizza to private parties and events in the region, with quotes on request. For a holiday-home guest it is the straightforward option for an evening out that does not involve a long drive: Italian food in the middle of the town, with a Sunday lunch service as well as evenings later in the week.

Bahnhofstraße 8, 54649 Waxweiler
Restaurant Mon-Sun and public holidays 12:00-14:00 and from 17:30; bar from 11:00; Thursday closed
The Hotel am Schwimmbad is a traditional guesthouse with a restaurant, a Pilsstube and a sun terrace, on the road that drops from the centre of Waxweiler down to the outdoor pool by the river Prüm. Run by Jeroen van der Zalm, it is open all year and takes its role as the village inn seriously: the restaurant serves Eifel regional specialities in a plain, welcoming setting and is set up for family celebrations, while the beer lounge opens late in the morning. The terrace is the reason to come on a fine day, with a wide view across the Prüm valley and down onto the swimming pool. Upstairs are seven guest rooms with television, shower and toilet, enough for a group of up to eighteen, and the rooms face the valley rather than the street. The list of guests the house names says a lot about who feels at home here: families, motorcyclists, who get a covered shelter for their bikes, walkers and cyclists on the Prümtal cycle path, who can lock their bicycles away, pilgrims on the Way of St James, who can have their pilgrim passport stamped, anglers, who can buy a permit for the Prüm, technicians and business travellers, and winter sports visitors. Dogs are accepted by request. There is generous parking, including space for large vehicles. The setting is the Deutsch-Luxemburgischer Naturpark, close to the point where Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg meet, and the pool next door makes it an easy afternoon for families with children before an early dinner.

Im Pfenn takes its name from the old local word for the boggy, moorish ground the house stands on, a quiet spot outside Irrhausen in the German-Luxembourg nature park, a short way north of Arzfeld. Christine and Michel Munkler built the house with its barn and stable in 1938; the stable became a tavern in 1961, the barn a guest house, and in 1966 the 'Gasthaus Munkler' opened to the public. The second generation added the large dining room in 1978, and since 2001 Christiane and Oswald Urfels have run it, with son Markus Gutweiler as co-manager since 2021, which makes it a family business in its fourth generation with around forty staff. The main restaurant seats up to 80, a room under the roof takes 25, and a large sun terrace with about 40 seats looks out over the countryside. The kitchen's own phrase is Eifel tradition meeting modern regional cooking, built on fresh products from nearby. Two things are named as specialities: the filled cream puffs served in the afternoon, and from November onwards game dishes from the family's own hunting, which they process themselves. Weekday lunch is deliberately kept small. Birthdays, weddings, closed parties and company events are catered with menus, buffets or themed evenings. Outside there is a play and sports field for children, and the paths into the surrounding forests, meadows and streams start at the door, which is why the house welcomes families, groups, hikers, cyclists and motorcyclists alike and carries the 'Wanderbares Deutschland' hiking certificate.
Manderscheid · German home cooking · Steak and grill · Fish and seafood
Heilhauser Mühle 1, 54649 Manderscheid
Thu-Sat 17:00-20:30; Sun and public holidays 11:30-20:30 (kitchen open throughout); Mon-Wed closed; winter break until late March; groups outside these hours by arrangement
The Heilhauser Mühle is a converted historic mill on the L12 between Lünebach and Waxweiler, down in the Prüm valley where the road runs between trees and water. The family has run it as a Landgasthof for more than thirty years and is now in its third generation; a small campground sits on the same grounds. Inside there are several distinct rooms: the snug Mühlenstube, a sunny winter garden, a fireplace room and a rustic barn whose glass floor looks straight down onto the old, illuminated mill wheel. Outside, a beer garden and a terrace face the mill pond, and the house recommends them as the stop after a walk. The cooking is regional country fare, running from schnitzel to rump steak, with game specialities, fish, vegetarian options and children's dishes, plus seasonal recommendations that change with what is available. Examples the house names are the 'Eifelliebe' salad with curry dressing, chicken and fresh fruit, the 'Mühlenknacker', a stuffed pancake filled with minced meat and cheese, and at weekends fresh salmon in wine sauce with rice and salad from the buffet. The mill lies directly on the Prümtal hiking trail, the Prümtal cycle path and the Panoramaweg 100, so hikers and cyclists arrive on foot or by bike and families come for a long Sunday lunch. Family celebrations, walking groups and company outings can book a set menu or a rustic buffet, and groups can be received outside the regular hours by arrangement. The house closes for a winter break each year and reopens in spring.
