Prince of India

Bayfield Road, Portree, IV51 9EW

+441478612681

Mon–Sun 12:00–14:30, 16:30–23:00

Prince of India is an Indian restaurant on Bayfield Road in Portree, serving a broad selection of dishes influenced by different parts of the Indian subcontinent. The kitchen also brings Scottish fish and seafood into its cooking, pairing local ingredients with Indian spices and techniques. Separate menus cover eating in and taking food away. A business lunch is another part of the restaurant's offer. The dine-in menu starts with choices such as onion bhaji, vegetable samosa and mushroom pakora, alongside chicken and lamb tikka. A vegetarian starter selection combines several of the vegetable dishes on one plate. The tandoor section includes marinated chicken and lamb, a mixed grill, and shashlik with onions, peppers and tomatoes. Vegetables also appear in a mixed grill seasoned with tandoori spices. Balti dishes form a substantial section of the menu, with options based on chicken tikka, lamb, king prawns, beef, vegetables, mushrooms, paneer or chickpeas. The sauces cover different flavours and levels of heat: spinach and garlic, chilli and garlic, tomato and ginger, or lentils combined with balti sauce. This gives diners several ways to build a meal around their preferred main ingredient. The restaurant presents its cooking as traditional Indian cuisine while making room for the seafood associated with its Scottish island location. Contact is available by telephone or email, and the published menus allow visitors to compare the dine-in and takeaway choices before deciding how to eat.

Lower Deck Seafood Restaurant

Portree · Fish and seafood · Lunch · Dinner

1 Douglas Row, Portree, IV51 9DD

+441478613611

Lower Deck Seafood Restaurant stands on Douglas Row beside Portree harbour. Established in 2007 as a family run restaurant, it takes inspiration from the area's maritime past: the decor recalls the passenger ferries that once served these waters. The kitchen sources seafood from local fish merchants and prepares homemade meals with fish and shellfish at their centre. Its sample menu gives a detailed introduction to that approach, although individual dishes change with supplies and demand. Cullen skink combines smoked haddock, potatoes, onions and cream, with bread from MacKenzies in Portree. Mussels appear both as a starter and as a main course, accompanied by the chef's sauce of the day. Other examples include roast salmon with a whisky and honey glaze, smoked haddock and pea risotto, and grilled hake or pollock with a hazelnut and pesto crust. The restaurant's fish and chips comes with its own tartare sauce. Seafood salads offer another direction, with choices such as dressed crab, smoked mackerel or hot smoked salmon. The sample selection also includes beef cooked with Skye ale and a vegetarian dish of the day. Desserts draw on familiar Scottish ingredients, including cranachan with raspberries, cream, honey and toasted oatmeal, alongside cheese and oatcakes. Service operates on a walk-in basis, with tables allocated in arrival order. Neither individual diners nor groups can reserve, so a visit here is arranged by arriving at the restaurant rather than securing a table beforehand.

Tianavaig Restaurant

Portree · Fish and seafood · Vegetarian · Seating indoors

Bank Street, Portree, IV51 9BU

+441478612525

Tianavaig Restaurant is part of the Royal Hotel on Bank Street in Portree, with an open plan dining room looking across Portree Bay. The room combines a spacious layout with sea views, while a lounge gives guests somewhere to settle with a drink before their meal. Scottish produce shapes much of the food, particularly fish and shellfish. The restaurant names salmon, haddock, mussels and prawns among its ingredients, alongside familiar dishes such as fish and chips. Haggis with neeps and tatties provides another connection to traditional Scottish cooking. Vegetarian choices and gluten free options are available, so diners with those requirements have alternatives within the restaurant's offer. The drinks selection includes wine and Scottish whisky, with Talisker from Skye among the whiskies stocked. Wi-Fi is available in the restaurant. Tables can be reserved directly with the hotel by telephone or email. Tianavaig belongs to a long established Portree hotel that has served generations of the local community and has undergone several refurbishments. The building now contains forty bedrooms as well as its restaurant and Macnabs Bar. The bar is another part of the hotel's food and drink offer, with local drinks and a broad whisky selection. For restaurant visitors, the defining combination is a modern dining room, recognisable Scottish dishes and an outlook over the water. The bay remains a visible part of a meal here, placing the town's coastal setting alongside the seafood on the table.

Sea Breezes

Portree · Steak and grill · Fish and seafood · Vegan

2 Marine Buildings, Quay Street, Portree, IV51 9DE

+441478612016

Sea Breezes occupies a dining room on Portree Pier, with windows looking over the harbour and the boats using the waterfront. Seafood gives the restaurant its main direction, and the kitchen sources as many ingredients locally as possible. Langoustines, mussels and seafood platters are among the dishes highlighted by the house, with availability determining what can be served. The platters bring several kinds of island seafood together for people who want to share. Alongside the shellfish, the menu includes familiar dishes such as scampi and steak with chips, giving the table alternatives to a meal built entirely around seafood. There are starters and desserts as well as main courses. Sticky toffee pudding, chocolate brownie and Scottish cheeses are among the choices named by the restaurant. Vegan and gluten free options are available, and guests with specific dietary requirements can discuss them with the team. Drinks include local whisky and gin, with Talisker and Misty Isle among the producers mentioned by the house. The room has Wi-Fi for customers. Sea Breezes welcomes both visitors and local diners and operates on a walk-in basis without table reservations. Its position beside the pier makes the harbour part of the experience, with fishing boats arriving and landing their catch nearby. After eating, guests can continue along the pier or walk around Portree, while the nearby Scorrybreac circuit offers another perspective on the bay.

Scorrybreac

Portree · Fish and seafood · Takes reservations

7 Bosville Terrace, Portree, IV51 9DG

+441478612069

Scorrybreac occupies a setting above Portree harbour on Bosville Terrace, where chef Calum Munro builds modern Scottish cooking around the produce of Skye. The restaurant takes its name from the Gaelic for speckled rock, a reference to the dark cliffs along the bay. Its intimate character and coastal location provide a setting for a tasting menu shaped by the island's land and water. Wild venison, seafood supplied by local fishermen, foraged plants and shoreline sea vegetables are among the ingredients that define the kitchen. The restaurant also identifies edible fungi, seaweed and shellfish as sources of inspiration. Rather than presenting Scottish cooking through a list of familiar dishes alone, the emphasis falls on what the surrounding landscape supplies and how those ingredients can become part of a composed meal. That connection between place and plate is the central thread of the experience. Reservations can be made through the restaurant's booking system, while parties of five or more are asked to contact the team by email. There are specific limits to the dietary requirements the kitchen can accommodate: vegetarian and vegan menus are unavailable, as are meals for guests who must avoid dairy entirely. The restaurant also cannot cater for severe allergies involving a risk from cross-contamination. Children under twelve are not accommodated. These conditions make Scorrybreac a place to choose with the whole party's needs in mind, particularly when planning a shared tasting-menu experience.

8 Allée du Marégraphe, 35400 Saint-Malo

La Corderie sits on the Cité d'Alet peninsula in Saint-Servan, on the far side of the harbour from the walled town, with a terrace that looks across the estuary of the Rance to Dinard. The same family has run it for more than thirty-five years, and the kitchen has stayed with what the boats bring in: sole and bass from the bay, scallops in season, lobster from the tank, a fish soup that regulars order without opening the menu. It is a quiet, unhurried place, better for a long lunch with the view than for a quick bite. Booking is wise for the terrace on a sunny day.

Le Globe-Trotter is a small restaurant in the heart of the Cité d'Alet, between the Solidor tower and the Bas-Sablons beach, and its name is the menu: dishes gathered from journeys, cooked with what the Breton markets offer. A Thai curry can follow a Breton fish tartare, a tagine a plate of grilled prawns, and the card changes often enough that regulars find something new each visit. At midday there are set lunch formulas between about €15 and €22, which makes it one of the better-value sit-down lunches on this side of the harbour. The terrace is sheltered and there is room for families; evenings are calmer than in the walled town.

The Crêperie Solid'Or is named after the Solidor tower that stands a few steps away at the mouth of the Rance, and it does the one thing a Breton crêperie should do well. The galettes are made from organic buckwheat flour, the classic complète with ham, egg and cheese alongside fillings with andouille, scallops or goat's cheese and honey, and the sweet crêpes come with salted-butter caramel made in house. Cider is served in bowls, as it should be. At the weekend the kitchen stays open through the afternoon, which suits a late return from the beach at Bas-Sablons. It fills up quickly in summer; the terrace on the esplanade is the place to wait.

3 Chaussée du Sillon, 35400 Saint-Malo

+33299561074

The Brasserie du Sillon stands right on the seafront promenade, ten minutes on foot from the ramparts, with the beach and the tide in front of the windows. It is a seafood house first: oysters and whelks from the bay, a Royal Sillon platter stacked with crab, langoustines and prawns, grilled fish of the day and moules-frites. The menu changes every six to eight weeks with the season, and there is meat for those who did not come for the sea. Between lunch and dinner the room becomes a tea room, which makes it a good stop after a long walk along the Sillon. The dining room is level and accessible, and the terrace faces the water.

Favorite Coffee is a coffee shop on the Sillon, the long seafront promenade, run by three sisters who wanted a place that serves breakfast all day. That is what it does: eggs, pancakes, granola bowls, avocado toast and fresh juices from morning until the afternoon, with specialty coffee, matcha and homemade cakes alongside. The room is bright and the tables outside face the beach across the road. It is the kind of place for a slow morning after a swim, or a late breakfast on a day when the tide has taken the beach away. Weekends are busy; midweek mornings are the calm ones.

The Auberge du Clos des Vignes is a country inn on the road between Saint-Malo and the Rance, ten minutes by car from the walled town and away from the summer crowds. Tony and Alexis run it as a pair, one in the kitchen and one in the room, and the cooking is French bistro food done with care: a market menu that changes with the week, meat from the region, fish from the coast, proper desserts. It opens for lunch and dinner every day of the week, which is rarer than it sounds around Saint-Malo, where many kitchens close on Mondays. The garden makes it a good choice for an evening when the town is full; parking is easy.

Avenida Cataluña, 57, 44610 Calaceite

+34978851028

Fonda Alcalá is a family restaurant in Calaceite whose cooking connects the Matarraña countryside with more than a century of hospitality. Founded in 1922 and now in its fourth generation, the house combines inherited recipes with newer preparations. It is a place for a deliberate meal, with the region's beans, olive-growing landscape and slow-cooked dishes providing a strong sense of location. The traditional side includes white beans from Beceite, served with a choice such as cured sardine, house-cured pork belly or local longaniza. Ternasco lamb from Aragon is cooked slowly, while the menu preserves family meatball and partridge recipes. Alongside these are prawn tartare with grilled bone marrow and ravioli filled with duck and foie from Teruel. The range makes the relationship between old and new easy to explore at the table. Fish choices include grilled wild cod and a market-dependent fish of the day. The kitchen also offers vegetarian preparations that can be adapted for vegan diners, seasonal suggestions and a nine-course tasting menu called Cuarta Generación. That tasting format requires an advance reservation and can be accompanied by a wine pairing; the cellar includes wines and cavas from the surrounding region. Desserts are made in house, with an apple pudding from the family repertoire and an almond dessert among the choices. Book directly for your preferred format and mention any dietary requirements in advance. Customer parking is provided opposite the restaurant. If travelling with a dog, ask when reserving: the team considers requests according to what can be accommodated.

Golden Fish is the Chinese takeaway on Castle Road in Churchstoke, a village in the Powys border country near Montgomery and Bishop's Castle. The menu covers the traditional Chinese dishes, the portions are generous, and customers praise the quick, friendly service. It opens in the evening, which makes it the easy answer to dinner after a day out in the hills. In October 2024 Powys County Council gave the kitchen the top food hygiene rating of 5, "very good".

Archie-Lily's is a family-friendly cafe at Crosslikey in Churchstoke, on the Welsh side of the border with Shropshire. It opens for breakfast and cooks homemade food through lunchtime, and it is a favorite for a Sunday lunch. The cooking is classic British cafe fare - breakfasts, sandwiches and burgers - in generous portions at fair prices, with vegetarian options and ice cream to finish. Orders tend to arrive quickly, there is plenty of parking, and the cafe is easy to reach in a wheelchair.
