Captain's BBQ

Palm Coast · Burgers · Cakes and pastries · Lunch

5862 N Ocean Shore Blvd, Palm Coast, 32137

+13865972888

Mon–Sun 11:30–19:00

Captain's BBQ is a Southern barbecue restaurant at Bing's Landing in Palm Coast. Wood-burning smokers are central to the kitchen: meats and side dishes are cooked slowly to develop their smoke flavor. The process also means particular items can sell out, so the restaurant accepts advance meal orders. The menu gives guests several ways to explore the smoker's output. Pulled pork, sliced beef brisket, smoked turkey, chicken, St. Louis ribs and andouille sausage appear as plates, with combinations for anyone who wants to try more than one meat. Sandwiches take the same ingredients in different directions. A Cuban combines smoked ham and pulled pork with mustard, pickles and Swiss cheese, while the Carolina Smokey Joe mixes pork and brisket with tangy sauce and slaw. Burgers provide an alternative to the barbecue plates, using a house blend of brisket, short rib and chuck. Side dishes include collard greens, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, baked beans and sweet cornbread. There is also a vegetable burrito with beet salad and goat cheese. Desserts are baked on the premises, with New York-style cheesecake and several flavored variations among the choices. The setting places the restaurant within the park, making it a natural food stop during a visit to Bing's Landing. Dogs are excluded from the restaurant and its deck, while pet-friendly picnic tables and covered areas are available in the surrounding park. Catering and private celebrations are also offered, extending the same barbecue cooking to birthdays, weddings and company gatherings.

Wed–Sun 09:00–14:00; Mon–Tue Closed

La Creperie Kafe is a family-owned French restaurant in the Shops at Palm Harbor in Palm Coast. Its cooking draws on family recipes passed between generations, with dishes prepared from scratch and a choice of a dining room or outdoor seating. Crepes are the central attraction, but quiches, croissants and French sandwiches give the menu several directions. The savory crepe selection includes La Complete with scrambled eggs, ham and Swiss cheese, a spinach and provolone version, and a three-cheese combination of goat cheese, Brie and Swiss. Smoked salmon comes with capers and sour cream, while another crepe brings together shrimp, garlic, parsley and cream. Savory crepes are accompanied by gratin dauphinois and fruit. Guests can also build their own combination of fillings. Quiche Lorraine combines eggs, bacon, ham, Swiss cheese and creme fraiche in pastry, alongside a spinach quiche and a changing monthly option. Croque Monsieur offers baked ham and Swiss beneath bechamel; Croque Madame adds an egg. For something sweet, the choices move from sugar and butter or lemon curd to more elaborate combinations. La Normande uses baked apples, cinnamon and caramel, while other crepes pair chocolate spread with bananas, strawberries or pears. Coffee includes espresso, cappuccino and latte, with almond and oat milk available. The range suits companions who want different kinds of meals: one can choose a quiche or savory crepe while another opts for a croissant, omelette or sweet crepe. It is a French family kitchen with enough variety to build a visit around either savory cooking or a sweet treat.

Mon–Fri 16:00–21:00; Sat 11:30–21:00; Sun 11:30–20:00

Portugal Wine Bar & Grill is a family-owned restaurant on Palm Harbor Village Way in Palm Coast, serving Portuguese cooking alongside wines from Portugal. The business has been welcoming diners since 2015, with a menu that gives particular attention to seafood, rice dishes and the many ways Portuguese kitchens prepare cod and octopus. A meal might begin with little neck clams in garlic, coriander and white wine, cod croquettes, or Portuguese sausage flambéed at the table. Garlic shrimp and grilled octopus provide other starting points. The main courses offer a wider exploration of the same ingredients. Bacalhau à Brás combines shredded cured cod with onions, scrambled eggs and crisp potatoes. Cod loin also appears fried with sliced potatoes and onions, while grilled octopus is paired with roasted potatoes, peppers and garlic olive oil. Seafood rice stew brings shrimp, clams, calamari and mussels together in yellow rice. Pasta and risotto provide alternatives, including octopus risotto and linguine with shellfish. Diners who prefer meat can choose bitoque, a steak topped with a fried egg and accompanied by rice and fries, or mixed picadinho combining pork, chicken, shrimp and Portuguese sausage. A separate vegetarian section includes vegetable paella and pasta primavera. The breadth makes it possible to plan either a seafood-focused meal or a mixed table with different preferences. Reservations are available, as are takeout and delivery. For a first visit, the cod preparations offer a useful introduction to the kitchen's Portuguese emphasis, while an appetizer and a rice dish make another possible route through the menu.

La Piazza Cafe

101 Palm Harbor Pkwy, Palm Coast, 32137

La Piazza Cafe brings family Italian cooking to European Village in Palm Coast. Diane Colabella-Lass and the Lass family previously ran restaurants in New Jersey before moving to Florida, drawing on recipes and traditions learned from their grandmothers. Their approach combines that background with a kitchen that prepares fish and steaks in house and makes sauces to order. The dining experience can unfold inside, among dressed tables and fresh flowers, or outside beneath illuminated grape trellises. Outdoor heaters and a fireplace add to the setting. The menu ranges from familiar Italian American dishes to substantial meat and seafood preparations. Starters include fried calamari, baked clams with seasoned breadcrumbs, tomato bruschetta on focaccia, and eggplant rollatini filled with cheese. Pasta choices include carbonara with pancetta, rigatoni in vodka sauce, linguine with clams, and shrimp in lemon, butter and white wine. Chicken and veal appear in Marsala, piccata and parmigiana preparations, while grilled New York strip and filet mignon broaden the choice beyond pasta. Gluten-free pasta is available, and selected dishes can be adapted. Wine is another part of the restaurant's identity, with pairing dinners bringing bottles and food together. For celebrations, a separate banquet room accommodates up to fifty guests, with connected spaces available for larger gatherings. Menus for private occasions can be arranged as individual courses, family-style service or buffets. Whether choosing a pasta supper for two or planning a family occasion, guests have several ways to shape a meal around the same Italian kitchen.

Mamaling

Palm Coast · Asian · Fish and seafood · Dinner

1280 Palm Coast Pkwy SW, Palm Coast

+13863020777

Tue–Sun 16:30–21:00; Mon Closed

Mamaling brings an Asian street-food approach to Palm Coast Parkway Southwest. Its menu moves between Vietnamese pho, Japanese ramen, Thai curries and small plates, making the restaurant a useful choice for diners who enjoy exploring several styles within one meal. Start with pork dumplings, edamame or sticky ribs, or try a Szechuan mini taco built on a crisp wonton shell. The larger dishes offer noodles, rice and curry in several combinations. Pho uses rice noodles in beef broth, while roast pork ramen comes with mushroom broth, egg, bamboo and shiitake. Zen ramen provides a mushroom-based alternative. Green curry and lemongrass coconut curry sit beside pad Thai, fried rice and shaken beef. Several preparations offer tofu alongside chicken or shrimp, and the menu identifies gluten-free dishes and options. Drinks extend from beer, wine and sake to tea and sake sangria. Reservations are suggested for parties of six or more. For a first visit, consider choosing a small plate before deciding between a noodle bowl and a curry. That approach leaves room to compare crisp textures with broth or sauce, rather than ordering several similar dishes. Companions with different tastes could each choose a distinct main course and use the starters as a shared introduction. The attraction here is the opportunity to move across familiar Asian comfort dishes and less familiar combinations without committing the whole table to a single type of meal.

Mon–Fri 07:00–20:00; Sat–Sun 08:00–20:00

Drunken Monkey is a neighbourhood coffee house in the Milk District of Orlando, Florida, a short drive east of downtown. The shop describes itself as Orlando's local coffee shop, and the building is hard to miss: a small purple house on North Bumby Avenue that has become one of the district's landmarks. The coffee is roasted in house. Alongside it the kitchen bakes its own goods and cooks a menu that deliberately covers vegan, vegetarian and meat dishes rather than treating the first two as an afterthought, which is unusual enough in central Florida to be worth saying. Local artists hang work on the walls, and the art changes. Opening hours are long and simple: Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. That covers breakfast, a working morning, lunch and an early dinner, and there is seating outdoors. The Milk District takes its name from the dairy at its centre and sits between downtown Orlando and the Audubon Park area. It is a walkable pocket of small independent businesses rather than a strip of chains, which makes it a reasonable base for a morning if you are staying in the east of the city. Orders can be placed ahead through the shop's own site if you would rather collect than wait, and the telephone is answered during opening hours. You will find Drunken Monkey at 444 North Bumby Avenue, Orlando, FL 32803.

DOMU is a ramen bar and Japanese kitchen inside East End Market, in the Audubon Park Garden District of Orlando, Florida. The first DOMU opened on this spot in November 2016. The East End Market location has carried a MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand award every year from 2022 through 2026, and in 2025 the kitchen was named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: South. It also features in season 7 of the Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil. Dinner is served seven days a week: Sunday to Thursday from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and on Friday and Saturday until 11:00 pm. Brunch runs on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm. Happy hour is daily from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, and on Tuesdays it runs all night. One thing worth planning around: DOMU takes no reservations. Seating is walk-in only, first come, first served, which the restaurant describes as equal-opportunity dining, so arriving early on a Friday or Saturday evening is the safer bet. A gratuity of 20 percent is added automatically for parties of six or more. The restaurant closes on July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You will find it at 3201 Corrine Drive, Suite 100, Orlando, FL 32803, inside East End Market, a food hall and market building a short drive north-east of downtown Orlando. Two further DOMU kitchens operate in Florida: one at Dr. Phillips on Restaurant Row in Orlando, and one at St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville.

La Bella Napoli Italian Restaurant serves Neapolitan-influenced cooking on Shoal Line Boulevard in the Weeki Wachee area. The restaurant traces its beginnings to 1990 and connects its food to owner Umberto's roots in Naples. The menu centers on pasta, chicken, veal and seafood, with enough variety for a group whose members want different kinds of Italian dishes. Pasta choices include ricotta ravioli and rigatoni with mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes and spinach. Linguine with clams is offered with either a red or a white sauce, while other preparations use tomato, cream or seafood. The range lets you choose between a simpler pasta meal and a more substantial dinner without having to order the same style of dish as everyone else. Beyond pasta, the kitchen offers chicken Marsala, veal piccata and eggplant Parmigiana. Tiramisu and cannoli are among the desserts. There is also a children's menu. The restaurant says that dishes are prepared to order and that gluten-free choices can be requested; discuss your needs directly, especially if an allergy rather than a preference is involved. For planning, use the full street address and telephone rather than relying on the restaurant name alone. The published schedule has evening service from Wednesday through Friday and earlier starts on the weekend, with Monday and Tuesday closed. Call ahead for a group or a particular seating time, and check current dishes and hours before making a special trip.

Bayport Inn is a waterfront restaurant on Cortez Boulevard in the coastal village of Bayport, near Weeki Wachee. Seafood is central to its offer, and its setting brings together a dining room, outdoor seating and a bar. For guests staying around Hernando Beach, it provides a different coastal stop from the restaurants clustered along Shoal Line Boulevard. The restaurant describes its food as coastal cooking and combines meals with live music. It is a place to consider when the setting and the evening's entertainment matter as much as choosing a particular dish. Check the current menu with the team if you are hoping for a specific fish or seafood preparation; the day's choice is more useful for planning than an old menu found online. There are practical options for different kinds of visits. The local tourism authority lists dine-in and takeaway service, a children's menu and outdoor seating. Beer and wine are available. If you are choosing between an indoor table and a seat outside, ask what music is scheduled and whether your preferred seating area can be reserved, especially for a family meal or a larger group. Use 4835 Cortez Boulevard for directions. Bayport Inn publishes lunch-through-evening opening hours, with an earlier finish on Sunday. A direct call is useful before a special trip or a holiday visit. Allow time to enjoy the waterfront setting rather than treating it only as a quick food stop on the road.

Hernando Beach Tropical Grille sits behind the marina on Shoal Line Boulevard, overlooking a canal connected to the Gulf of Mexico. Look for the tiki hut behind the marina building: the waterfront position is part of the reason to come here. Outdoor tables and a casual style make this a place to consider for lunch or an unhurried early dinner by the boats. Owner Mark describes the restaurant as his version of a New England clam shack, inspired by family meals on the North Shore of Boston. That influence runs through the menu, which includes whole-belly Ipswich clams, North Atlantic haddock and a Maine lobster roll. The lobster roll is offered with mayonnaise or butter, allowing you to choose the preparation you prefer. Florida-style seafood choices sit alongside those northern favorites. The published menu includes blackened fish tacos, a grouper sandwich and shrimp and scallop skewers. Burgers, wings and other meat options provide alternatives for a mixed table. Beer and wine are available, and the restaurant describes its dress code simply as casual. You can arrive by road or by boat, although boaters should contact the marina or restaurant about access and a suitable place to tie up. For a road visit, follow the address through to the waterfront side of the marina rather than stopping at the main building. Check the kitchen's current closing time before an evening journey, particularly if you are planning to eat late.

Silver Dolphin Restaurant & Country Store combines a meal by the water with a small shop and garden in Hernando Beach. This family-run address on Shoal Line Boulevard serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, making it an option at several points in a day along Florida's coast. The setting and the food both lean toward an informal visit rather than a formal occasion. Breakfast includes pancakes, omelets, eggs and bacon, with coffee or a brunch drink alongside. Later in the day, the kitchen focuses on seafood and American home-style dishes. The restaurant also offers seasonal specials, so it is worth looking at the day's menu before settling on a particular dish. Availability can change with ingredients and supply. Dessert is part of the offer too. Silver Dolphin highlights its strawberry-shortcake cheesecake cake, while Papa Clyde's hand-dipped ice cream provides a simpler sweet stop. Homemade fudge is sold in the country store. You can make a full meal of your visit or leave time afterward to browse the shop, whose selection includes local art, handmade jewelry, coastal decorations and old-fashioned candy. The garden and waterfront setting give this restaurant a character distinct from a roadside diner. For planning, use the full Shoal Line Boulevard address and contact the team about current meal times, seating or a larger party. Breakfast, lunch and dinner have separate menus, so checking the right one helps you choose a visit that suits your group.

3430 Shoal Line Boulevard, Hernando Beach, 34607

Brian's Place brings Spanish and Italian cooking together on Shoal Line Boulevard in Hernando Beach. Chef Brian Alvarez connects that combination to his Latin-Italian family background and his experience in Florida kitchens. The business began as a deli with his father in 2004 and later moved to a larger restaurant with a full bar, a patio and space for groups. The menu makes those influences easy to spot. Starters include chorizo crostini, coconut-crusted shrimp and mussels with chickpeas and chorizo. A Cuban quesadilla combines roast pork, ham, salami and Swiss cheese, while the salads range from mozzarella and tomato to spinach with almonds and Gorgonzola. These are different ways to begin a meal depending on whether your table prefers seafood, a salad or something to share. Among the main dishes, grouper comes with plantain in several forms, including a salsa and a crisp garnish. Slow-roasted mojo pork is another Latin-influenced choice. The pasta section includes crab in a tomato sauce with vegetables and penne, alongside mushroom, Alfredo and vodka-sauce preparations. Grilled steaks and chicken give diners alternatives to fish. Choose Brian's Place when you want a seated dinner with a broader menu than a simple seafood stop. The outdoor patio offers another setting for a table, and the restaurant maintains a separate live-music schedule. Check the current event listing and book directly if a particular evening or a group table matters to your plans.

Sha Wynwood is a Mediterranean restaurant with Asian influences in the Wynwood district of Miami, established in 2022. It is arranged as three connected spaces — a restaurant, a terrace and a lounge — and the character of the place changes as the evening goes on. The kitchen describes its menu as Euro-Asian-American, built on local ingredients and its own recipes, with wines, champagnes and signature cocktails alongside. Dinner is the serious part of the night. Later the room turns over to live music and DJs, so an early table and a late one are two different experiences of the same address, and it is worth deciding which one you came for. Opening hours run Monday to Friday from 4:00 pm to 2:00 am, and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 2:00 am — so the weekend adds a daytime service the weekdays do not have. Reservations are taken by telephone. Wynwood is Miami's arts district, north of downtown, best known for the painted walls that cover much of the neighbourhood and for the galleries, breweries and shops that grew up around them. Northwest 25th Street sits in the middle of that, which makes this an easy stop to combine with an afternoon spent walking and looking. You will find Sha Wynwood at 97 Northwest 25th Street, Miami, FL 33127.

Rutina Coffee is a specialty coffee bar on Biscayne Boulevard in Edgewater, Miami. The shop pairs coffee with music culture and sells beans as well as serving them, so a bag can go home with you. What is on the bar is named openly, which is rarer than it should be. One of the house coffees is an Obata roasted by Finca's Coffee and grown in Santa Barbara, Honduras, at 1,400 to 1,600 metres, washed process, described as balanced and fruity with honey, a hint of nut, sweet vanilla and chocolate, and a citric mandarin note. If you care which farm your cup came from, this is a place that will tell you. The bar is open every day from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. There is seating outdoors and wireless internet, which together make it usable for a working morning rather than only a quick stop, and breakfast and lunch are both served. Edgewater runs along Biscayne Bay between downtown Miami and the Design District. It is one of the fastest-changing parts of the city, largely residential towers now, and the ground-floor businesses along Biscayne Boulevard are what give the neighbourhood its daytime life. Biscayne Boulevard itself is US-1 through this stretch, so the address is simple to find whether you are driving down from the north or up from downtown. Beans bought here can also be ordered through the shop's own online store, which is the practical answer if you find something on the bar you want to keep drinking at home. You will find Rutina Coffee at 2001 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33137.

Sagrado is a cafe on Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami that calls itself a lifestyle cafe and means it as an instruction: the room is built for staying rather than for turning tables. Breakfast, coffee, brunch, happy hour and desserts are served all day. The kitchen leans Brazilian, which shows most clearly in two of its signatures. The Brigadeiro Collection is built around the Brazilian chocolate confection, and the Picanha Plate takes the cut of beef that is the centre of a Brazilian churrasco. Alongside those the bakery works from scratch every morning, and the coffee is single origin, pulled by the house baristas. The cafe opens every day from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, with seating outdoors. Breakfast runs into brunch and brunch into an afternoon, so there is no narrow window to hit. Number 900 Biscayne Boulevard sits in Park West, at the northern edge of downtown Miami, a few minutes on foot from the Kaseya Center and from Museum Park with the Perez Art Museum and the Frost Museum of Science. If you are staying downtown without a car, this is one of the places you can reach without planning a journey around it. The Metromover runs through this part of downtown and is free, which makes the cafe an easy stop from most of the central hotels and apartments even without walking the whole way. Seating outdoors on Biscayne Boulevard is the pick in winter; in the middle of a Miami summer afternoon the inside is the wiser choice. You will find Sagrado at 900 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33132.

Mon–Sun 11:00–21:00

Shorty's BBQ is a barbecue restaurant on Southwest 40th Street in West Miami, one of several locations the business runs in South Florida. This is the West Miami branch. The menu is built around barbecue combinations, and the sides are as fixed a part of it as the meat: every combo arrives with the house coleslaw, golden French fries and garlic bread, with cornbread available in place of the bread for a small surcharge. All white meat can be requested for an extra dollar, five wings or a sausage can be added to any meal, and there are family feasts sized for a table rather than a person. Catering is offered as well, which tells you something about the portions. The restaurant is open every day from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, so lunch and dinner are both covered and there is no closing day to plan around. Ordering ahead is possible through the restaurant's own site. Southwest 40th Street is Bird Road, one of the main east-west routes across Miami-Dade County, and this stretch is straightforward to reach by car with parking on site. That matters here: West Miami is not a neighbourhood most visitors walk through, and this is a place you drive to. Bird Road runs west from Coral Gables towards the Florida Turnpike, so the restaurant is a practical stop on the way in or out of the city rather than a detour. You will find Shorty's BBQ at 11575 Southwest 40th Street, Miami, FL 33165.

Panaderia 20 de Julio is a Colombian bakery and cafe on SW 186th Street, named after Colombia's independence day, and it opens at half past six in the morning, seven days a week. The counter is the reason to come: pandebono, the cheese bread that has to be eaten while it is still warm, empanadas, cheese fingers, and a run of Colombian and Cuban pastries and breads that turns over through the morning. There is hot food as well, the rib soup among it, which is a proper lunch rather than something to go with a coffee. The room is a cafe as much as a shop, clean and plain, with the pace of a place where most customers are on their way somewhere. Closing is at four in the afternoon. For anyone staying in Cutler Bay this is the morning stop: bread and pastries for the house, a coffee standing at the counter, and it opens two hours before anything else in the neighbourhood. It is also the least expensive way to feed a family of four before a day out, which matters on a holiday where the kitchen is part of the booking.

UpTop is a Jamaican kitchen with a lounge attached, on SW 107th Avenue at the northern edge of Cutler Bay. The card is the full island repertoire rather than a jerk stand: oxtail cooked slowly until it falls off the bone, curry goat, brown stew chicken and escovitch fish, each served the traditional way with rice and peas or steamed cabbage. Jerk chicken and the oxtail are the two dishes guests name most often, and portions are known for being generous enough that a single order does for two modest appetites. The doors open at eight in the morning and the kitchen runs through until nine in the evening from Monday to Thursday, which is unusual for the style and makes it useful at hours when most Caribbean kitchens in South Florida are closed. There is a lounge as well as a dining room, so the room fills and gets louder as the evening goes on. For a guest staying in Cutler Bay who wants to eat something that belongs to this part of Miami rather than to a national menu, this is the short drive to make, and takeout is the usual way people order it on a weeknight.

Tejas de Honduras is a family-run Honduran kitchen in a small unit on SW 106th Avenue, and it is a breakfast place first. The doors open at seven in the morning on weekdays and Saturdays and at eight on Sundays, and what comes out of the kitchen at that hour is the Honduran breakfast proper: two eggs, beans, butter, cheese, fried sweet plantains and a corn or flour tortilla on one plate. The other thing to order is a baleada, the folded flour tortilla that is Honduras in one hand, filled with beans, cheese and butter and, in the fuller version, meat and egg as well. Pastelitos come two to an order, ground beef with cabbage, sauce and cheese. The food is made in the house rather than bought in, the portions are sized for people going to work, and the room takes orders to go and delivers. Closing is at five in the afternoon on weekdays and six at the weekend, so this is a morning and midday address, not an evening one. For a guest staying nearby it solves the problem every self-catering holiday has on the first morning, before anyone has been to a supermarket.

Urban Rrasoi cooks Indian food on Old Cutler Road, a few doors from the raw bar and in a part of Florida where Indian kitchens are thin on the ground. Rasoi is the Hindi word for kitchen, and the house describes what it does as traditional recipes worked with fresh creativity rather than a fixed regional canon, which in practice means the northern Indian dishes most guests know sit beside plates the kitchen has made its own. Miami's produce and Miami's seafood find their way onto the card, as they do in most of the better kitchens down here. The room seats guests indoors, takes orders to go and delivers, and the hours are steady through the week: half past eleven in the morning until half past nine in the evening from Sunday to Thursday, until ten on Friday and Saturday, with the kitchen open right through the afternoon rather than closing between services. For anyone staying in Cutler Bay this is the one address in walking distance of Old Cutler Road that is not seafood, not a burger and not a chain, and it is open at three in the afternoon when everything else in the neighbourhood has shut its doors until dinner.

Rodbenders is the neighbourhood raw bar on Old Cutler Road, the kind of room where the oysters are shucked in front of you and the television is on. The menu runs to seafood first, with raw oysters, a fish dip that regulars order before they sit down, fried shrimp, blackened mahi tacos and a tuna poke bowl, and then broadens into burgers, sandwiches, wings and a chilli the house has won awards for. Prices sit in everyday territory rather than special-occasion territory, and the happy hour runs every day from three in the afternoon to seven in the evening, with domestic drafts at 3.75 dollars, domestic bottles and well drinks at 3.95. The hours are the other reason people come: the kitchen serves from eleven in the morning until midnight from Monday to Thursday, until one in the morning on Friday, and from ten in the morning at the weekend. That makes it one of the few places in Cutler Bay where a late arrival still gets a hot meal. For a guest staying nearby, it is the practical answer to a first evening: five minutes away, no reservation needed, and open long after a delayed flight into Miami has been sorted out.

Black Point Ocean Grill sits at the marina at the end of SW 87th Avenue, where Cutler Bay meets Biscayne Bay and the road simply stops at the water. The house calls itself a waterfront seafood restaurant and keeps the description honest: fresh seafood, produce, hand-cut steaks, salads and sandwiches, served in a dining room and, for most people who come here, on the open-air terrace over the water. Boats go in and out of the marina channel through the whole meal, and the restaurant points out that guests regularly watch the wildlife of the bay from their table, which is a fair description of a place built on the edge of Biscayne National Park rather than a claim about the food. Live bands play here, and the kitchen keeps long hours by South Florida standards: open at eleven every day of the week, and on Friday and Saturday until midnight. The mix on the menu is the local one, seafood alongside steak and a sandwich list, so a table of four rarely has to argue. For anyone staying in Cutler Bay it is the closest thing the town has to a proper evening out without driving north into Miami, and the ten minutes it takes to get there end at the water rather than in a car park on the highway.

Mon–Fri 09:00–17:00; Sat 10:00–14:00; Sun Closed

Healthy Balance Meals is a deli style restaurant on Court Avenue in Sevierville, combining meals to eat on the premises with food to take away. Its two complementary menus make the distinction clear: one covers a prepared lunch, while the other supplies dishes made on site and frozen for later. That combination suits both a stop in town and stocking a kitchen for another meal. Salads form a substantial part of the selection. The strawberry spinach chicken salad combines fruit, feta, sunflower seeds and vegetables, while the Superfood Salad brings together kale, broccoli slaw, quinoa, edamame, blueberries and cashews. A burrito bowl adds seasoned turkey and brown rice to romaine, beans, corn and pico de gallo. Sandwiches, paninis and wraps provide alternatives to a salad bowl. The Mediterranean vegetable sandwich uses focaccia with hummus, guacamole, vegetables and feta. Chicken and turkey pesto preparations sit alongside familiar club sandwiches and grilled cheese. There are also handmade grass fed beef burgers and soups such as turkey chili and taco soup. The frozen meal selection extends into casseroles, lasagna, chicken dishes and Mexican inspired preparations, including a vegetarian spinach lasagna. Larger bags of prepared entrees offer another way to feed several people together. Catering includes boxed lunches and trays of sandwiches or wraps. With dine-in service and a separate take-home selection, the restaurant connects a conventional lunch visit with practical meal planning beyond the dining room.

Tue–Sat 16:00–21:00

The Appalachian brings contemporary Southern Appalachian cooking to Bruce Street in Sevierville’s historic downtown. Executive chef and partner David Rule builds the restaurant around the ingredients and food traditions of the Smoky Mountains and East Tennessee. A large wood burning hearth stands at the centre of the kitchen, giving smoke a defining role in the cooking. Rule’s earlier work includes Blackberry Farm in Walland, Dancing Bear Lodge in Townsend and the Walnut Kitchen in Maryville, where he was executive chef and partner. Those regional connections inform a restaurant concerned with its surroundings as much as with individual dishes. The menu ranges from small plates to substantial meat and fish preparations. Fried chicken skins combine local honey, smoked West Virginia sea salt and pickled peppers, while roasted bone marrow comes with shallots, herbs, green peppercorns and grilled bread. Buffalo frog legs bring another interpretation of familiar Southern ingredients. The restaurant’s broader culinary repertoire includes glazed duck, rainbow trout and dry aged steaks, with seasonal ingredients shaping the selection. Inside, darker colours meet brass, stone and wood, creating a setting suited to a deliberate meal with friends or a special occasion. Reservations are available. For a closer view of the kitchen, the separate Chef’s Table experience places diners beside the working chefs for a curated five course meal. The team guides guests through the progression of dishes and the ingredients behind them. Signature cocktails complete the restaurant’s approach to regional hospitality.

The Pines Downtown combines food, drinks and games inside a former entertainment hall on Court Avenue. The original Pines Theater opened in 1944, showing Western films and hosting live performers. Dolly Parton played her first paid engagement here in 1956, and the renovated venue keeps that musical history visible. A mural celebrates performers associated with the building, including Parton, Roy Acuff, June Carter Cash, Archie Campbell and Chet Atkins. Today, competition supplies much of the entertainment. Duckpin bowling uses smaller equipment than conventional bowling, and the games selection also includes Dutch shuffleboard, foosball, giant Jenga, darts, retro video games, snookball and board games. It is a setting built around spending time together, with food and drinks accompanying the activity. The kitchen’s provisions include loaded tots with cheese, bacon and chives, butterbean hummus with roasted peppers and tortilla chips, and smoked wings with lemon pepper or honey sriracha seasoning. The Pines Burger stacks two smashed patties with cheddar, caramelised onions, pickles and house sauce, accompanied by a choice of waffle fries, tots or salad. Pizzas range from cheese and pepperoni to heirloom tomato and a country ham version with pineapple and blush sauce. Cocktails are another part of the offer. Private parties and events can be arranged, and Trotter’s Whole Hog BBQ supplies the venue’s dedicated catering service. The combination gives the historic building a continuing social role through shared meals, conversation and games.

Seasons 101 occupies the Historic Central Hotel in downtown Sevierville, with an American bistro menu shaped by East Tennessee’s changing seasons. Partner and chef Deron Little combines classical cooking techniques with seasonal ingredients, presenting substantial dishes in a room designed for relaxed dining. Soft lighting, rich colours and accents of wood and stone give the interior its character. The restaurant grew from a connection between Little and Sevierville natives Sherry and Michael Johnson, who had enjoyed his cooking in Knoxville before bringing him into their downtown development. Its signature offerings show how the kitchen combines familiar ingredients with more elaborate accompaniments. A smoked pork rack pairs a bourbon, orange and brown sugar glaze with cherry compote and sweet potato puree. Filet mignon comes with portobello mushroom, caramelised onions, spinach and a rosemary red wine sauce. The ribeye takes a different direction with coffee and cocoa seasoning. A hunters platter brings together elk tenderloin, lamb and duck, while seafood preparations include shrimp with grits, barramundi and sockeye salmon. Vegetables have their own substantial plate, combining squash, mushrooms, artichokes, tomatoes, peppers and broccolini with grits, flatbread and hummus. Custom cocktails and a changing wine selection accompany the food, and desserts are made in house. The broader menu also includes brunch, soups, salads, burgers and sandwiches. Tables can be reserved, with a separate arrangement available for groups. The result is a downtown hotel restaurant with enough range for different appetites around the same table.

Red's Soda Fountain & Ice Cream

Sevierville · Ice cream

114 Court Avenue, Sevierville, 37862

Red’s Soda Fountain & Ice Cream brings a nostalgic soda shop experience to Court Avenue in downtown Sevierville. The present shop pays tribute to Red’s Cafe, the former business across the street that Dolly Parton visited as a child. Its own character centres on hand mixed drinks, ice cream and the pleasure of choosing something at the fountain. Scoops come in a dish, a cake cone or a waffle cone made in house. Flavours include vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, butter pecan, espresso and amaretto chocolate chip, with seasonal varieties joining the selection. The menu also identifies a lactose free salted caramel option. Beyond a simple scoop, there are sundaes finished with whipped cream, a cherry and a choice of toppings, plus a warm brownie version and banana splits. Milkshakes and malts can combine flavours, and specialty combinations include an Elvis, a PB&J and an Espresso Turtle. Hand mixed phosphates give the soda side of the business equal attention. Root beer, sarsaparilla, grape, cream soda and fruit flavours appear among the choices, while flights allow several tastes together. Ice cream sodas, floats and a Black Cow made with chocolate ice cream offer further variations. Food extends the visit beyond dessert: steamed beef hot dogs, a turkey sandwich, chicken salad on a croissant, a Cobb salad and pulled pork are among the offerings. The combination makes Red’s a place for a savoury bite followed by a fountain treat, as well as a dedicated ice cream stop.

Diyar is a Persian and Mediterranean restaurant in the Klahanie neighborhood in the south of Sammamish, about five kilometers from the house. The name means home and homeland, and the owners built the place around the Persian idea of mehmani, the duty to receive every guest with care. The dining room is decorated in a style drawn from Persian heritage, and the kitchen is led by chefs trained in traditional Persian cooking. Everything is prepared halal. Kabobs are the core of the menu: beef koobideh, saffron marinated chicken, barg made from thin sliced beef tenderloin, beef shish, shishlik lamb chops, Cornish hen and shrimp, served alone or as combination plates up to a family platter meant for sharing. The Persian stews are ghormeh sabzi with herbs, beans and dried lime, gheimeh bademjan with split peas and eggplant, a slow braised lamb shank with fava bean and dill rice, and zereshk polo with chicken, barberries and pistachios. Rice gets its own section, with saffron, sour cherry, carrot and lentil versions, and tahdig, the crisp rice from the bottom of the pot. Starters include kashk e bademjan, mirza ghasemi, hummus, falafel and yogurt dips, and a falafel plate and a mezze sampler suit vegetarians. For celebrations there is a VIP space for up to eight guests and a private room for up to fifty. Tables can be reserved, orders taken for pickup, and larger events are catered through a separate catering service.

Mommy's Kitchen is a North Indian kitchen on NE 8th Street in Sammamish, a few minutes north of the house, set up for takeout, delivery and catering rather than long evenings at the table. The name is meant literally: the people at the stove are mothers who between them bring more than sixty five years of cooking experience, and the team behind it had run other locally owned restaurants for some twenty years before opening this one. The cooking is home style Punjabi food. Starters include samosas, aloo tikki, paneer and vegetable pakoras and khaman dhokla from Gujarat, plus chaat such as samosa chaat, papdi chaat and bhalla chaat with tamarind and mint chutneys. The Punjabi combinations are the house signature: makki ki roti with sarson saag, chole bhature and chole poori. The vegetarian curries cover dal fry, dal makhani, aloo gobhi, achari aloo, palak paneer, kadahi paneer, paneer tikka masala and malai kofta, and the meat side runs from butter chicken and chicken tikka masala to goat curry and boneless lamb curry. Breads are made by hand on the tava, from whole wheat roti to corn makki roti, with naan and garlic naan, and rice comes plain, with cumin or as a pea or vegetable pulao. Gajar halwa ends the menu. The menu marks every dish that is vegetarian, vegan or gluten free, which makes ordering for a mixed group simple. The kitchen closes between lunch and dinner and stays closed on Mondays. Catering is offered across King, Snohomish and Pierce counties.

Seema Tasty Delights is a small Indian cafe in the shopping center at 3310 East Lake Sammamish Parkway, down the hill toward the lake from the house. It calls itself a neighborhood spot built around three things: Indian coffee, handmade sweets and chaat, and it is meant as a place where friends sit down and talk. Hot drinks include South Indian filter coffee, tea, milk and Nescafe, and the cold side has mango and rose lassi, chikoo and mango shakes, smoothies and acai bowls. The savory menu leans toward Maharashtra and Mumbai street food. There is vada pav, the spiced potato fritter in a soft bun, bun maska with butter, sabudana vada, cilantro fritters, suralichi vadi, batter fried green chili mirchi, pani puri, dahi sev puri, bhel, samosas, Mysore bonda and a paneer thecha puff. A separate tiffin section brings South Indian staples: idly, vada, pongal, puri, plain, ghee, cheese and masala dosa, Mysore masala dosa, and parotta or chapati with curry. Biryani comes with boneless or bone in chicken, with egg, or as a vegetable and paneer version. To finish there is kulfi in mango, malai, chocolate and Oreo versions. Orders can be placed online for pickup, and the cafe also caters events with Maharashtrian, Thai and non vegetarian menus. The shop opens early on weekdays, a little later at weekends, and stays closed on Mondays.

Pine Lake Ale House is the neighborhood pub of the Sammamish Highlands, on 228th Avenue NE just north of the city center. The house describes itself as a place where food, craft beer and the local community come together, and the Sammamish Chamber named it Small Business of the Year. The room is family friendly, with screens showing the local games, so it works as well for a Sunday dinner with children as for a pint after work. Behind the bar the taps rotate through craft beers from the Pacific Northwest and further afield, alongside house cocktails and a bourbon collection. The kitchen cooks from scratch every day. The menu is American pub food done generously: a long list of burgers including a fish burger with Alaskan cod, a veggie burger and a blackened Coho salmon burger, sandwiches such as the Reuben on toasted rye, a Monte Cristo, a prime rib French dip and a Philly steak and cheese, and plates like fettuccine Alfredo, macaroni and cheese and fish tacos. On Saturday and Sunday mornings there is a proper breakfast menu with omelettes, eggs Benedict, an avocado and veggie version, chicken fried steak and eggs, huevos rancheros, prime rib hash, a breakfast burrito, biscuits and gravy, buttermilk pancakes and cinnamon French toast. The pub is closed on Mondays and open from late morning into the evening for the rest of the week.

Thai Trio sits in the Sammamish Highlands Shopping Mall on 228th Avenue NE, a short drive north of the house. The restaurant is the American branch of a Bangkok family business that has been selling Thai street food since 1983. Their first stall in Bangkok stood right on the street with three small tables for nine guests, and the family says it never quite felt like a restaurant, more like a food joint. Today the Bangkok shop seats fifty people at Or Tor Kor Market, and the recipes behind it have now made the trip to Washington. The idea here follows the street vendor habit of doing a few dishes very well instead of a long menu. The family's flagship is Swimming Rama, of which they report having sold more than one and a half million plates. Around it the menu keeps to a focused list: Thai chicken rice in the khao mun gai style, stewed pork leg with rice, Thai fried chicken, pad thai, pad see eiw, drunkard's noodles, panang curry, papaya salad, tom yum noodle soup and mango sticky rice, with Thai tea, Thai iced coffee and mango smoothies to drink. The kitchen publishes a detailed allergen page. It offers a vegetarian version of several dishes made without fish sauce or shrimp extract, a gluten sensitive pad thai, and keeps crushed peanuts in a separate container on the side. You can eat in or order to go, and the house lists its special closing days, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, on the website ahead of time.

Louvre Michaelense stands on the Rua António José d'Almeida in the middle of Ponta Delgada, the capital of São Miguel. The house keeps no website, so nothing here describes what it serves; what can be set down is the address, the hours and the name. The name is worth a sentence. Michaelense is the adjective for São Miguel — a person or a thing of this island — so the house calls itself the island's Louvre, which is a large claim made with a straight face and tells you it is a room that holds things as much as it is a place to sit. The hours describe an all-day room rather than a restaurant with services: eleven in the morning until midnight, without a break, six days a week. It is closed on Wednesday, which is the one thing to plan around. Thirteen hours in a stretch means a coffee at three in the afternoon and something at eleven at night are equally possible, and in a town where most kitchens shut between lunch and dinner that is the point. Ponta Delgada is about half an hour west of Ribeira Chã along the south coast, and this street is in the old centre, a few minutes from the harbour front and the city gates. You will find Louvre Michaelense at Rua António José d'Almeida 8, 9500-053 Ponta Delgada.

O Silva has been cooking on the Rua Direita de Cima in Ribeira Grande since 1979 — more than forty years of the same kitchen, run on family recipes handed down through the generations. Regional character, tradition and freshness are the three things the house names for itself, in that order. It is unusually specific about what it is known for, which saves a visitor guessing. The famous dish is the Bife à Silva. Then there is arroz de cherne com miolo de camarão — wreckfish rice with shrimp — the espetada de cherne com camarão, cavaco, and filetes de abrótea, fillets of forkbeard. Cherne and abrótea are deep-water fish of these islands and are not things you will have eaten at home. Food is also prepared to take away, which the house calls flavours at home. It is closed on Monday. Tuesday to Saturday it serves lunch from midday to three and dinner from a quarter to seven until ten; on Sunday there is lunch only. The Rua Direita de Cima runs through the old centre of Ribeira Grande, the island's second town, on the north coast about forty minutes from Ribeira Chã. The drive crosses the middle of São Miguel over the ridge, past the Lagoa do Fogo, which makes the journey there worth as much as the meal at the end of it. Adega Caloura is a restaurant in an old wine cellar in Caloura, the fishing hamlet below Água de Pau where the vineyards run down to the sea in stone-walled terraces. The vaulted room, the barrels and the candlelight make it the most atmospheric dinner on this stretch of the south coast, and it is small enough that a table is worth reserving. The kitchen is fish and seafood first: grilled tuna and tuna tartare when the boats bring it in, garlic prawns, octopus, with a couple of vegetarian plates and a long list of Azorean and mainland wines to go with the cellar. It opens only in the evening and only on some days of the week, which vary through the year - a phone call before driving down saves a wasted trip.

Bar Caloura sits right on the water at Caloura, the small harbor below Água de Pau on the south coast of São Miguel. It began in the 1980s as the place where the local fishermen met, and it has kept that spirit: informal, with a terrace over the sea where the sound of the waves comes with the meal. The kitchen is about fresh fish and seafood - limpets, prawns and the catch of the day from the grill - alongside Portuguese dishes. The restaurant is accessible by wheelchair, takes reservations and also does takeaway.
