About Agde
Staying in Agde
Agde stands on the Hérault river a few kilometres inland from the Mediterranean, in the Hérault department of Occitanie between Béziers and Sète. Greek settlers founded it around the sixth century BC, which makes it one of the oldest towns in France, and it was built from the dark basalt of the extinct volcano Mont Saint-Loup: the fortress-like Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, the lanes of the old centre and the quays along the river are all black stone, hence the nickname "black pearl". The Canal du Midi meets the sea here through the Écluse Ronde, a circular lock from the 1670s that boats still pass. The commune has three coastal quarters: Cap d'Agde, a purpose-built resort with a large marina and long sandy beaches beneath the basalt cliffs of the Grande Conque; Le Grau-d'Agde, a fishing harbour at the river mouth with a working fish auction; and La Tamarissière, a quieter beach settlement backed by pines. Roughly fourteen kilometres of sand run along the coast, and the Bagnas nature reserve behind it draws birdwatchers. Trains including direct TGVs to Paris serve Agde station, and the A9 motorway passes to the north. June and September give warm sea without the high-summer crowds. It suits beach holidays with children, boating and cycling along the canal.

When is the best time to visit Agde?
May, June and September have warm days, swimmable sea and space on the beach. July and August are the peak, when the population multiplies and the resort runs at full tilt. Between November and March the old town keeps going but many seasonal businesses at the Cap close.
Do I need a car in Agde?
You can manage without one: Agde station has regional and TGV services, and the Capbus network links the old town with Cap d'Agde, Le Grau-d'Agde and La Tamarissière. A car is useful for Pézenas, Sète and the oyster villages on the Étang de Thau.
Is Agde good for families and active travellers?
Very much so. The beaches shelve gently, the marked underwater trail at the Cap lets snorkellers see artificial reefs, and there are several hundred kilometres of signed cycle routes including the canal towpath. The Bagnas reserve and the walk up Mont Saint-Loup add easy half days.
Is Cap d'Agde only for naturists?
No. The naturist village is one self-contained quarter with its own entrance, beach and accommodation. The rest of Cap d'Agde, Le Grau-d'Agde, La Tamarissière and the old town are conventional in every respect, and most visitors never see the naturist area.
