Tallaght lies about 13 km south-west of central Dublin, where the suburbs end and the Dublin Mountains begin. It started as a monastic settlement founded by St Maelruain in 769 and stayed a small village until the 1970s; today it is the largest town in Ireland without city status, with The Square shopping centre, the Civic Theatre, the Rua Red arts centre and Tallaght Stadium, home ground of Shamrock Rovers. Its appeal for visitors is practical: the Luas Red Line runs from its Tallaght terminus to Abbey Street in the city centre in roughly forty minutes, so you can stay in a house with parking and still reach Temple Bar without driving. In the other direction, the Bohernabreena reservoirs in the Glenasmole valley are around 3.5 km along the R114, with loop walks beside the water and views towards Kippure; the Dublin Mountains Way ends in Sean Walsh Park after crossing the hills from Shankill. Spring and early autumn are the best months for those trails, and Dublin's festivals and rugby weekends fall in between. Tallaght suits families visiting the capital on a budget, longer working stays and walkers who want the hills before the pub.

When is the best time to visit Tallaght?
May to September gives the longest days for the mountains and the city. Dublin is busy around St Patrick's Day in March and in high summer, when central hotels are dearest and a Tallaght base makes the most sense. Winter is mild but wet, and the reservoir paths can be muddy.
Do I need a car in Tallaght?
For the city, no; the Luas Red Line and Dublin Bus cover it. A car makes the Dublin Mountains, Glendalough and the Wicklow coast far easier, and parking at a Tallaght home is usually free, which is not true downtown. The M50 orbital motorway is close by for onward trips.
Is Tallaght good for families or active travellers?
Both. Tymon Park and Sean Walsh Park have playgrounds and lakes, the Civic Theatre runs children's shows, and the tram makes the zoo and museums a straightforward day out. Runners and hikers use the Dodder Valley greenway and the reservoir loops from the door.

The lower reservoir is about 3.5 km south-west of the town along the R114, and riverside paths through Kiltipper and Dodder Valley parks lead most of the way. Parking at the entrance is limited, so walking or the TFI Local Link bus from Tallaght Luas is often easier. The two reservoirs still supply Dublin with drinking water.
