Ribeira Chã sits on an escarpment roughly 100 metres above the Atlantic on the south coast of São Miguel, between Água de Pau and Vila Franca do Campo, in the municipality of Lagoa. With fewer than 400 residents it is the smallest parish in the municipality, and it calls itself a "parish-museum": a museum of sacred art, the preserved rural house of Maria dos Anjos Melo and an agricultural museum with an ethnographic garden sit within a few streets, alongside the modernist church of São José from 1967 with its mosaic work. The Miradouro do Pisão looks down over the harbour and natural swimming pools of Caloura, a short drive away, and Lagoa town has municipal sea pools and the Cerâmica Vieira pottery, founded in 1862. Ponta Delgada and the island's airport lie to the west along the coast road, and the crater lakes of Sete Cidades and the hot springs of Furnas are each a day trip in opposite directions, with Lagoa do Fogo in the hills directly above. The Azores are green and mild all year; June to September is driest and best for swimming. Ribeira Chã suits couples and small families who want a village base with a car.

When is the best time to visit Ribeira Chã?
Late spring through September brings the warmest sea and the most settled weather, and the hydrangeas along the roads peak in June and July. Winter is mild but changeable, with cloud often sitting on the crater rims. Whatever the month, pack a rain layer.

Yes, in practice. Buses run along the south coast, but the crater lakes, Furnas and the north coast are only convenient by car, and hire cars are cheap to collect at Ponta Delgada airport. The village itself is small enough to walk end to end.

Families will find sea pools at Caloura and Lagoa, a sandy strip at Baixa d'Areia in Água de Pau and calm village streets. Walkers have the descent to Lagoa do Fogo and the coastal paths towards Vila Franca, while whale-watching boats leave from Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo.
What is there to see in the village itself?
Three small museums and an ethnographic garden document farm life, sacred art and a traditional Azorean home, and the church of São José is a rare piece of 1960s modernism on the island. The Pisão viewpoint at the edge of the village gives the classic view over Caloura. Most of it can be seen in a slow morning.
