Villasimius sits on the Capo Carbonara headland at the eastern end of the Gulf of Cagliari, roughly an hour's drive from the Sardinian capital along the coast road. The town itself lies a little inland; the reason people come is the ring of beaches around it, from the long white curve of Simius and the sheltered bay of Campulongu to Porto Giunco, where a strip of sand separates the sea from the Notteri lagoon and its flamingos, and Punta Molentis, a small cove wedged between granite boulders. Offshore, the Capo Carbonara marine protected area takes in the islands of Cavoli and Serpentara and is the main snorkelling and diving ground on this coast. On land there is the Fortezza Vecchia watchtower above the cape, an archaeological museum in town and, in late July, a boat procession for the Madonna del Naufrago. The season runs from May to October; July and August are busy and hot, while June and September give warm sea and quieter roads. A car makes the scattered beaches easy to reach, though a summer shuttle serves the nearest ones. It suits a week of sea, sand and simple evenings in town.

When is the best time to visit Villasimius?
June and September are the sweet spot: the sea is warm, the beaches have room, and the roads are calmer than in high summer. July and August bring the crowds and the heat. From November to April many places close and the town is very quiet.
Do I need a car in Villasimius?
A car is the easiest way to reach the beaches, which are spread around the headland, and to make day trips to Costa Rei or Cagliari. In summer a local shuttle links the town with the main beaches, and a bus runs to Cagliari, so a car-free stay is possible if you are happy to stay close.
