Willingen is a climatic spa village in the Upland, the Hessian corner of the Sauerland uplands in the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, ringed by hills that top 800 metres. The Ettelsberg is the centre of things: a cable car climbs it from the village, the Hochheideturm on the summit puts a viewing platform at about 875 metres above the high heath, and in winter its flanks carry the main ski area with floodlit runs and snow-making. The Mühlenkopfschanze, one of the largest ski-jumping hills in the world, hosts a FIS World Cup weekend every winter that fills every bed for miles. In summer the Uplandsteig long-distance path links all nine villages of the municipality, mountain bikers use the lift-served bike park and the Bike Arena Sauerland network, and the Lagunen-Erlebnisbad water park covers wet days. The Diemelsee reservoir borders the municipality to the north with swimming and boat hire. The Uplandbahn railway between Korbach and Brilon-Wald stops in the village, crossing a stone viaduct from the First World War on the way. Expect a cool climate even in July. Willingen suits active travellers in both seasons and families who want a lift, a pool and a trailhead within walking distance.
