Ziano Piacentino stands on a hill above the Val Tidone in the province of Piacenza, close to the border with Lombardy and about 25 kilometres west of the city. It is often cited as having more of its territory under vines than any other municipality in Italy, and the landscape shows it: rows of Barbera, Croatina and Ortrugo run over every slope between the hamlets of Vicobarone, Montalbo, Seminò and Albareto. The wines are the reason to come. Gutturnio, a red blend, and Ortrugo, a light white, are both local DOC wines, and many estates pour them at the cellar door. The village itself is small, with the church of San Paolo Apostolo, a sixteenth-century town hall, the remains of a tenth-century castle and a viewpoint over the hills. Vicobarone has a museum of rural life. September brings the Festa dell'Uva, the grape festival, and harvest traffic on the lanes. Spring and autumn are the best walking and cycling seasons; summer is hot in the valley. A car is needed. Piacenza, the medieval town of Castell'Arquato and the Oltrepò Pavese are all within reach for a day out. It suits a slow, food-led stay.
